Surry County is located in the foothills of northwestern North Carolina, midway between New York City and Miami. Since 2003, Surry and neighboring counties are part of the Yadkin Valley Wine Region, which is the first American Viticultural Area in North Carolina. With beautiful scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Surry County is a combination of farmland, country homes and estates, historical landmarks, state parks, and small towns. Speaking of beautiful mountain views, the Blue Ridge Parkway is just a short drive from most residences in Surry. According to the 2000 US Census, the population of Surry County is 71,219. Located in the northwest corner of North Carolina along the Virginia state line, Surry County is approximately 537 square miles. Surry was formed in 1771 from neighboring Rowan County and was named for Surrey, England – the birthplace of NC Governor William Tyron. Surry County has a moderate climate. Temperatures range from an average High of 47 degrees with an average Low of 27 degrees in January to an average High of 87 with a Low of 67 degrees in July. The yearly rainfall is approximately 40 inches and yearly snowfall is 7 to 10 inches. As a resident in Surry County, you will be able to enjoy ALL 4 seasons! The Triad Area consists of 3 cities — Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point — all within an hour and thirty minutes from Surry County. Surry County, NC Surry County has two area hospitals.  Northern Surry Hospital is in Mount Airy and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital is in Elkin.  Hugh Chatham has had recent renovations to make it a regional cancer center.  A variety of doctors and medical specialists also have offices within the county. On the lighter side, Surry County is host to an array of extracurricular activities including the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival, Autumn Leaves Festival, Yadkin Valley Wine Festival, Bud Break Festival and more. Pilot Mountain State Park provides for hiking, nature walks, camping, fishing, and picnicking. Stone Mountain State Park in neighboring Wilkes County has rock climbing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.  Remember The Andy Griffith Show? Mount Airy, located in Surry County, is the birthplace of actor Andy Griffith and is home to the Mayberry Mall, Andy Griffith Playhouse, Floyd’s Barber Shop, and more.
